New Season, New Rules: Winter Tires Required on B.C. Roads This October.
October 09 2025,

Across much of British Columbia, Oct. 1 signals the return of mandatory winter tire regulations. These rules run until April 30 on most highways, while some areas without steep mountain passes or heavy snowfall conclude earlier on March 31.
Highways Where Rules Apply
The requirements include highways in the North and Interior, along with South Coast routes such as the Sea to Sky. On Vancouver Island, drivers must comply when travelling the Malahat, Highway 4, Highway 14, and Highway 28. The Lower Mainland and southeastern Vancouver Island are not part of the mandate, but shifting weather makes winter tires a smart choice in all regions.
Tire Standards That Qualify
To be considered legal, winter tires must display the mud and snow (M+S) symbol or the mountain and snowflake icon. They also require a minimum tread depth of 3.5 millimetres. Failure to meet these standards could result in a $121 fine, making proper preparation both safer and more cost-effective.
Chain Rules for Heavy Vehicles
Commercial vehicles have added responsibilities. From Oct. 1, most must carry chains on designated highways, with roadside signs indicating when use is required. Chains are not necessary in the Lower Mainland or most of Vancouver Island, but elsewhere they remain critical for safe winter driving.
